Gold: Inviting the Refining Fire of God

For the first post of 2017, I want to write something more personal (and maybe challenging) in hopes that my vulnerability will refresh you and the Holy Spirit will empower you to start this year more willing than EVER to invite the refining fire of God to do its work in your life.

“so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” – 1 Peter 1:7

Why Gold?

While praying for a word to declare over 2017, I heard the Lord tell me: Gold

Gold: something considered to be precious, beautiful, or of the most superior quality.

I thought to myself, “AMEN – bring on the gold – this is gonna be good”

What I found out later, is that God was giving me the overall picture of this year…the first step to becoming pure Gold isn’t necessarily what I was expecting.

Why Fire?

While praying for what this first season of “Gold 2017” would be, I heard the Lord tell me: Refining Fire

Refining Fire: Remove impurities or unwanted elements from a substance (my heart)

I now thought to myself, “well shoot…this doesn’t sound very fun anymore”

The first step to refining Gold is fire. Before this year can result in gold, The Lord is going to need to purify me. How is God meant to mold me or purify me without applying a little heat? Or how is the Lord going to do a new thing with a dirty old alloy?

“Neither is new wine put into old wineskins. If it is, the skins burst and the wine is spilled and the skins are destroyed. But new wine is put into fresh wineskins, and so both are preserved.” – Mathew 9:17 (new winskins…or new gold)

Why Invite?

While wrestling with what the first step was to being refined, I heard the Lord tell me: Invite the fire (also just btw…when the Holy Spirit first fell on the apostles, it was in the form of tongues of fire…)

Invite: to request the presence or participation of.

After this I thought, “Is this going to be one of those prayers that I hate to love?” (you know the kind)

For the Holy Spirit to do His work in us, we must invite Him. We must request His fire and the participation of His perfect refinement. Last week, I found myself pacing in my bedroom just asking and inviting Him to begin bringing His fire into my life…He wasted no time.

Whether it was revealing (and graciously correcting) my flesh, or convicting me of the countless distractions I had…He has already, in just one week, begun to light the tinder of what I’m asking (in obedience) to become a finishing fire.

“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 1:6

I write this simply to ask you to join me and invite the Holy Spirit to move in your life this year. For many of you this might not be a season of the fire of God, but it is always a season of the Holy Spirit…for He is God.

So, press into Him tonight and ask for the fire of God to come and burn out everything that is not of Him. It might not be fun, but it will be so worth it when you come out as radiant Gold.

“for our God is a consuming fire.” – Hebrews 12:29

And all God’s children said: Let it be done & AMEN.

  1. This is so beautiful. I have been trying to make sense of the same word given to me by the Holy Spirit and I must have only found this by his guidance! He is so amazing!
